One of the best albums I've heard this year, and my 2nd favourite Swedish one after BWO's (obviously!), is the new one by West End Girls. They're a teenage female tribute to the Pet Shop Boys, and their songs as well as being great cover versions also stand in their own right as ace pop songs. One of my favourites from the album (it was very hard to choose just one) is You Only Tell Me You Love When You're Drunk, which I've posted for download on Into The Groove. I doubt they would be very successful if they were to release music in the UK (ironic since the PSBs are a very British band) but I do hope they come over to do some live performances at some point, as I'd definitely like to see it. Oooh, I like West End Girls! I agree, You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk is probably the best. I also agree that they would totally nosedive over here but I reckon they could have a minor hit with a suped-up (ie watered down) version of one of the less obvious songs. Straight in at number 14 and out the following week etc. They look bags and piles and heaps of fun but I am not sure people would like young girls singing middle aged man's gay disco. Although I don't know why!!!
Also, I don't know whether I love or hate their version of Suburbia. I know it can be covered because I heard a choral version once and it was very good.

They're just one of those bands who prove how ridiculously close-minded the people who determine what is popular in the UK must be. I suppose it must reflect the public in some ways, but the fact that the PSBs were so huge in the 80s and now a similar band would have trouble having any hits at all just shows how things have changed. Still, change is a fact of life and I'm sure there have been improvements since then as well as bad things.

You're not in Sociology anymore Jessica! There is no need to be objective. People in the UK are crap and rubbish and poo. I actually think I prefer the The WEG's version of Domino Dancing to the PSB's, although I know that breaks all sorts of laws re: blasphemy.

Good point. People are POO! I don't think there's anything wrong with liking the WEGs version better, I do too in that case, although I didn't know the original version very well before I heard the WEGs' one.

I really like the Pet Shop Boys but I caught a bad cold when I went to see the outdoor concert of the Battleship Potempkin's soundtrack so they have sort of dwindled in my estimations.

My love for West End Girls has grown enormously after I saw them live. Such cool little girls! (Though they looked about 13 in real life).
The album is great. In my top five of Swedish albums this year (along with The Knife, BWO, Lo-Fi-FNK and Amy Diamond).

I loved their album, bit i hope that if they continue covering the PSB in their next albuns they do more recent songs. I would love to hear they doing Yesterday When I Was Mad, New York City Girl (their version would need to chang it's name off course), Home and Dry and the amazing Flamboyant.

Yeah, I would love to hear a version of Flamboyant, that's my favourite of their recent songs. Something from the new album would be good too, like Minimal or Integral or Numb. Actually, whenever I listen to their version of Shopping I keep expecting it to break into Sodom & Gomorrah Show at certain points so perhaps they should do that one. I'd like to hear what they come up with for original songs too.
