I assume a few of you will be knowledgable in the field of this. The only Arabic singer I'm particularly familiar with is Nancy Ajram, who is brilliant.
If you don't know, she's a Lebanese singer is like the Britney of the Middle East or something. As far as I am aware, she started off in a Pop Idolesque sort of way, after winning a contest on TV singing an Umm Kulthum song.
My favourite songs are Akhasmak Ah and Ah W Noss but she has loads of great songs that sound great if for no other reason that you don't have a clue what she's singing about. Which is great (although this is based on the assumption that you are as inept as I in speaking Arabic).
One thing I don't get about the girl is her physical appearence. In some pictures (vid screengrabs for example) she actually looks very pretty but in some promotional shots she is wearing the sort of make-up that any 50 year old over-surgeried Bride of Wildenstein would be proud of. I suspect it's probably due to having a large amount of plastic surgery but I do not like speculate....
Fairuz is another good Arabic singer. Her stuff is more melancholy of what I have heard. Well, I think it is, I never can tell.
Share you knowledge, people. Pretty, pretty, please.

I love Nancy. Despite the fact that her make-up does occasionally look like it was applied by a slightly over-zealous undertaker*, she can make scrubbing laundry look sexy. Arab pop, especially from Lebanon and Egypt, is a million miles away from the cultural asceticism people mistakenly expect from the region. Not only are female stars like Ajram, Elissa and Mariam Fares glamorous, they've got a kind of assertiveness and power that's rare even in less patriarchal countries. It doesn't matter how much the more traditional wing of the religious groups object, the people always side with the pop stars. The men are frequently pretty great too - i really like Iwan and Rachid Taha in particular. Nancy Ajram's Akhasmak Ah is below: www.box.net/public/static/bq6qi9dglt.mp3This is Taha's killer cover version of Rock The Casbah: www.box.net/public/static/p447s23rek.mp3*it's not due to plastic surgery, it's just the fashion.
